First Day of School

Jackson's First Day of Kindergarten

It's a day I've always thought about with mixed emotion, but it's now official: Jackson is in kindergarten.  I don't love the idea of letting other people teach my children, of not being a part of every day to day discovery.  And yet, for the social element, for the chance to stretch and grow, for the pure joy I see in Jackson... this is a great thing.  He has a wonderful teacher, he comes home and reports to me all the fun things he is learning, and let's be honest- with so many little ones at home right now, it is nice to have a small break.

The week before school started we went to Westmore's Open House.  We walked into the kindergarten wing, and saw a Chick a Chick a Boom Boom tree, bright alphabet posters, and the infamous cubbies.  While I was caught up in the whimsical detail and welcoming atmosphere, Jackson tugs at my sleeve and whispers, "Mom, this place is for little kids."  Oh dear.  All this build up to be a big kid, and here we are surrounded by stuffed animals and Lincoln logs.  After the initial shock, I think he totally loves his kindergarten classroom, toys and all.

The first day felt like victory: Jackson now joins the ranks of real backpack wearers.

Here are the pics we took of him the very first day.  Looking so handsome.

The writing here is precious to me.  Maybe someday it will even fit on one line.

We got up in the morning and he was so stinkin’ excited.  He ate a big battle breakfast and started pacing the floor, antsy and excited.  I dropped him off and he scurried in with his nifty poster project in hand.

So when I picked him up that day, August 28th to be exact, he was gushing with all the new procedures and structures he'd learned.  Jack loves a routine, so everything was awesome from practicing different volume levels, to sitting criss cross applesauce.  "They even had real-life recess!"   Yes, his time has arrived, and life is good.  Here he is with his best friend Ammon Larson, and a cute girl friend from the ward Boston Kamalu.  I still love getting the report from him every day and am amazed at how much he remembers.  Super fun to see.

Helping this momentous time of firsts was our cute Hallie girl starting dance class.  I wanted to let her have an activity that could be all hers, and I think this has been a good choice.  She was so excited for the pink skirt, the cute shoes, and getting to be like Angelina Ballerina.  Sometimes we like to call her our Hallerina.  :)

It was fun to see her shy and quiet, but very willing to jump into this new adventure.  She has been flying like an airplane, going high on her tippy toes, and letting her toes climb her leg (the clock) while she sings “Hickory Dickory Dock.”  “That’s a passe, Mom” Hallie loves to point out.  This girl definitely has some rhythm and it is fun to see her enjoying herself so much.

Here is all of us before some yummy cake on my b-day. I am one lucky mommy to have such cute kids. Love you all!
